I joined the Charangueando school in 2018 wanting to learn traditional charango. It has been two years of studying the traditional repertoire and the most important rhythms, always looking for the right way to play them. What stands out for me is the passion maestro Willy has for the charango and for spreading it.
I came to Charangueando in 2015 after hearing a beautiful rendition of Zamba de Lozano by Willy. It was a demanding road, but I found an incredible teacher, and together we went through scales, arpeggios, strumming and countless details of the charango I had no idea about.
After I retired, my goal was to play a string instrument, and I chose the charango that was hanging on the wall as an ornament. I thought that at my age learning was impossible; and yet I found maestro Willy Ríos, whose method, patience and good cheer make me enjoy this small, great friend with 10 strings.
I had been playing charango for years but I wanted more technique and more repertoire. Willy teaches by video call, from the comfort of my own home, and he includes a video going over each lesson. I would recommend taking lessons with Willy to anyone, beginner or experienced.
Willy is an experienced, gifted teacher who gives you the ideal way into the world of the charango. As a guitarist, he helped me make the transition and know where to focus. Thanks to Willy, playing charango is something I enjoy every day.
